BRUSH CALLIGRAPHY 101 PART 5: HOW TO WRITE THE LOWERCASE ALPHABET USING YOUR BRUSH PEN
Since you have already know and
practice the basic strokes of bush lettering, now it’s time for you to go to the
next level. Let us now write the lowercase alphabet. Get ready with your favorite brush pens and calligraphy practice sheets(
if you don’t have, you can download practice sheets here for free).
Let’s get started.
Lowercase alphabets, sometimes
called small case alphabets or for calligraphy technical term “miniscules”, are
the best way to practice to put your basic and best strokes into action. As
discussed on previous series, mostly brush lettering is based on cursive
writing with the application of thin upstrokes and thick downstrokes.
During our elementary days, we are
taught how to write cursive letters from a to z. But since we are all familiar
with cursive letters, we will tweak a little bit on how we practice lower case
alphabet brush lettering.
We will group the letter based on
their first strokes to make – oval group, curve group, ascender loop group,
descender loop group, and the special group.
OVAL GROUP
These are consist of letters with
oval as the first stroke. Examples are letters a, d, g, q, o, c and e.
We include the letter c and e on
this group since the stroke motion is similar to oval but incomplete.
Here’s the how to write the
letters under the oval group.

CURVE GROUP
These are consist of letters that
starts with overturn curves, underturn curves or compound curve. Examples are
letter m, n, u, w, y, v and i.
We include the letter v and i on
this group since the stroke motion is similar to curves but incomplete.
Here’s the how to write the
letters under the curve group.

ASCENDER LOOP GROUP
These are consist of letters that
starts with ascender loop. Examples are letter l, t, b, h, k and f.
Here’s the how to write the
letters under the ascender loop group.
ASCENDER LOOP GROUP |
DESCENDER LOOP GROUP
These are consist of letters that
starts with descender loop. Examples are letter j and p
Here’s the how to write the
letters under the descender loop group.
DESCENDER LOOP GROUP |
SPECIAL GROUP
We will include here letters with distinct stroke other than the basic strokes discussed. These lower case letters are r, s, x and z.
CONCLUSION
That’s it! Take your time to
practice writing lowercase alphabets using your favourite brush pen. You don’t
have to be on a rush. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Mine is not perfect too. (I
have tried so many times to write the drills since I mess up a few, hahahaha).
